Labor Relations
Home » What We Do »Building Kansas City’s Workforce Together
Labor relations is the ongoing work of maintaining collaborative relationships between contractors and the union workforce they employ. MCAKC represents Kansas City’s union mechanical contractors in that process, helping to negotiate agreements that keep projects moving, tradespeople supported, and the industry strong.
By signing these agreements, contractors commit to hiring union workers and following shared standards for wages, benefits, training, and safety. In return, they gain access to a highly trained workforce that can deliver complex projects.
We represent union mechanical contractors because their work is backed by rigorous training, strong safety practices, and stable career pathways for the people who build Kansas City’s essential systems. This structure supports consistent quality on complex projects and helps ensure safe, dependable work across our community.
Understanding Union Labor Relations
MCAKC exclusively represents Signatory Contractors, companies that have signed a formal agreement with a labor union. In Kansas City, those unions are Plumbers & Gasfitters Local 8 and Pipe Fitters Local 533.
These agreements are called Collective Bargaining Agreements, or CBAs. A CBA is a written contract agreed upon between a union and a group of employers that covers:
- Wage rates
- Health and retirement benefits
- Work hours and schedules
- Safety rules and job conditions
- How disputes are handled
CBAs remove guesswork for everyone involved.
How MCAKC Supports Collective Bargaining
MCAKC is the collective voice of Signatory Contractors in negotiations with Kansas City’s plumbing and pipefitting unions.
- We gather input from contractors to prepare for negotiations.
- We meet directly with Local 8 and Local 533 to negotiate CBA terms.
- We communicate outcomes and changes to contractor leadership.
The goal is to reach agreements that keep work moving, ensure fair conditions for both contractors and employees, and support a strong, competitive industry in Kansas City.
Continuing Collaboration with Union Partners
MCAKC and our union partners work together year-round on issues that extend beyond negotiations. Together, we support mental health resources for mechanical contractors and their employees, and we connect students and community members to career options in the mechanical trades.
