1830s–1860s
A City Built on Momentum
Kansas City emerges as a transportation hub and center for trade. Sitting at the confluence of two rivers and the edge of the frontier, the city grew rapidly as the nation pushed westward.
1889
MCAA Founded
The Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) is established, a national organization that supports education, labor relations, and industry advocacy across the union mechanical construction and service industry.
1890
Local 8 and Our City Beautiful
Kansas City’s “City Beautiful” movement drives a wave of investment in public health and modern infrastructure, including the fountains that would eventually earn the city its nickname: “City of Fountains.” That surge of demand for skilled pipe tradespeople led to the chartering of Plumbers & Gasfitters Local 8.

1890
The Local Association Is Born
Soon after, local contractors formed the Association of Master Plumbers of Kansas City, the earliest version of today’s MCAKC.
1911
Local 533 Is Chartered
Pipe Fitters Local 533 receives its charter. Kansas City continues to grow a strong network of mechanical contractors supporting major projects.

1975
Two Associations, One Mission
The Association of Master Plumbers of Kansas City and the Heating, Piping and Air Conditioning Contractors Association of Kansas City formally merge, bringing together decades of mechanical, plumbing, and piping expertise under one organization.
1981
MCAKC Is Official
The merged organization is officially named the Mechanical Contractors Association of Kansas City (MCAKC).
