Day 1: Architectural & Structural Plan Reading

 provides a practical introduction to reading and interpreting architectural and structural construction drawings used on commercial building projects. Participants will learn how construction documents are organized, how to navigate plan sets efficiently, and how to locate critical project information.

Topics include floor plans, elevations, sections, schedules, foundation plans, structural framing systems, and construction details. Participants will also gain a basic understanding of project delivery methods and how drawings and specifications support project planning, coordination, and execution.

Day 2: MEP Plan Reading focuses on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) construction drawings, including HVAC systems, electrical distribution and lighting plans, plumbing systems, equipment schedules, and coordinated MEP drawings.

Target Audience: Project engineers, project managers, estimators, coordinators, and anyone seeking a stronger understanding of construction documents.

Cost: There is no charge for employees of MCAKC Member Contractors Signatory to Local 8 & 533.

$150 for Non-Members Signatory to Local 8 & 533.
$200 for Associate Members.

Image for Architectural & Structural Plan Reading: Day 1Brad Perkins, P.E., is a Senior Lecturer in Iowa State University’s Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering. A graduate of Iowa State’s Construction Engineering program, Brad joined the faculty in 2005 after working as a design engineer. He serves as faculty advisor to Iowa State’s Mechanical Contractors Association student chapter and has been recognized for his contributions to engineering education, including receiving MCAA’s Educator of the Year Award in 2018.
