On Saturday, January 31, MCAKC proudly partnered with Heartland Women in the Trades (HWIT) to host the WiMI-KC Basics of Home Repair seminar at the Plumbers & Gasfitters Local 8 Training Center. It was a successful and engaging morning that brought women together to build skills, share knowledge, and support one another.
More than 40 women from across the union mechanical industry came together for a hands-on, confidence-building experience focused on practical home repair skills. The workshop was led by union tradeswomen who generously volunteered their time on a Saturday to teach, mentor, and support women from our union mechanical contractor offices.
Stations covered essential skills such as drywall repair and painting, electrical basics, tiling and grout repair, faucet and toilet repairs, and HVAC maintenance. Using real tools and working with real systems, attendees gained practical knowledge and left with increased confidence they could take home with them.
The tradeswomen of Heartland Women in the Trades brought not only expertise, but also encouragement and patience that made each station approachable and empowering. Their leadership and volunteerism played a huge role in creating a welcoming, supportive learning environment.
We are also grateful to the Plumbers Local #8 Training Center for opening their doors and providing the space that made this event possible.
Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, and helped make this seminar such a positive experience. Events like this continue to strengthen our WiMI-KC community by supporting skill development, connection, and confidence in the trades.
